ANCIENT CITY OF KAMIROS
Ancient Kamiros is located 30 km west of Rhodes Town and was one of the three powerful
cities in Rhodes, in ancient times. Built on a hillside and in full view of the sea, the ancient
city of Kamiros was rediscovered in 1929 and has been called the Greek Pompei because
nobody knows why and how the city was deserted and buried.

Built around the 7th century B.C., the ancient city of Kamiros contains the remains of an
advanced civilization that is dated nearly 3,000 years old. The houses, roads, market place,
baths, temple and water systems are visible. The town folks were farmers who traded
wines, olive oil and pottery. Ruins of houses and common areas have been uncovered with
paths and alleys plainly visible. The ruins of both Temples are there to be seen and you can
walk down the paths and alleys picturing how it must have been. The energy and culture of
the original inhabitants remain very much in evidence. Ancient Kamiros continues to
fascinate visitors year after year.
